Celebration, Akassa, 2023

As he frequents Union Square, Akassa regularly stands among a wide variety of people. They pass before him, all ranging in their expressions, mood, and energy. However, despite these ostensible differences, there is commonality. In recognition of our shared humanity, Akassa brings everyone together in this swirling composition that stylistically draws from his Senegalese roots. He captures our entropy and puts it on the canvas, as he symbolizes our unity through the uniformity in color. The work itself is not only a call to celebration of everyone who comprises the human race, but a reflection of what it means to live the human experience.
